The Plunger (or French Press) is an easy and consistent way to brew coffee. It’s the classic way to brew for a few people at once, during brekky or after lunch.
Depending on how much brewed coffee you want, you’ll need varying amounts of ground coffee. We’ve found that 60-70g coffee per litre of water is a good ratio. So for one and a bit cups, you’ll need 20g coffee and 300g water.
Step 1 - Prepare
Start with at least ½ litre of fresh filtered water and bring to the boil. While waiting for the water to boil, rinse the plunger glass and filter with hot water.
Step 2 - Grind
The beans should be ground quite coarsely; between your fingers it should feel like coarse sand. Make sure your plunger is empty of water, and add the ground coffee to the plunger.
Step 3 - Pour
Add your boiled water quite vigorously to your plunger and start your timer. Let it brew for 1 minute, and then give it a good stir. Now let it brew for 3 more minutes.
Step 4 - Plunge
Gently and slowly push the plunger down until it is holding the ground coffee firmly on the bottom of the plunger. Now pour, drink and enjoy!
A Few Tips
+ If you can’t plunge without pulling a muscle, try coarsening your grind, or use slightly less coffee.
+ If you like your coffee a little stronger, use more coffee or less water.
+ If the coffee tastes watery or weak, try brewing it for longer than 4 minutes, or use a finer grind.
